Charles is a seasoned banker of over 23 years’ practical banking experience that cuts across all facets of central and commercial banking. Charles formerly worked as a regulator with the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) in various capacities; -Banking, Bank examiner, Internal Audit and Finance. While at CBK he had an opportunity to work at Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC) and did statutory management to five ailing financial institutions restructuring a few of them while liquidating others.Charles moved to Co-operative Bank in 2004 initially as Senior Credit Risk Analyst before being deployed to Enterprise-wide Risk Management as a senior manager to lay foundation for Risk management for the bank as per the Central Bank’s Risk Management Guidelines and Basel II Accord.
In 2006 Charles moved to KCB Banking Group where he Headed Group Operational Risk & Compliance supporting – Kenya, Tanzania, Southern Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda& Burundi. Charles was central in formulation of the Group’s Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Framework that supported Operational, Credit, Market and Compliance Risk management process across the Group. Charles oversaw the implementation of the Bank’s Risk framework across the group through identification, assessment, monitoring & reporting, risk control and mitigation plans enabling the Bank treble profitability with an admirable EPS/ROI and as well as enter new markets in all the six East African countries.
Charles assumed Executive leadership at Higher Educations Loans Board (HELB) in March 2013 as the Chief Executive Officer/Board Secretary to transform the Board to achieve its core mandate of higher education student financing in line with the country’s development agenda as underpinned in Vision 2030& Agenda 4 stemming from international accords – Sustainable Development Goals and Africa Agenda 2063. Specifically Charles has beenkey in implementing the Board’s Corporate strategy to deepen & widen student financing through relevant and competitively priced students financing products. Part of the envisaged transformation is converting HELB into Development Finance Institution (DFI) – “Education Bank” offering first class customer experience while enhancing Fund sustainability towards Universal Student financing in Universities and TVETs.
Charles is a professional accountant both local and International holding a CPA(K) and a Fellow of Certified Chartered Accountants, FCCA.
Charles is married to one wife Silvia and between them have three children – Bonface, Jack and Ivy.
